On the northern flank of Table Mountain on the slopes of Devils’ Peak looking out across Rondebosch and the Cape Flats towards the distant sea and the Helderberg and Hottentots Holland Mountains stands Rhodes Memorial.

This monument was built in 1912 on the very place where Cecil John Rhodes used to ride to on horseback to sit and contemplate his future. The architects being none other than the famous Sir Herbert Baker and Sir Francis Macey built with granite from the rock bases upon which the mountain rests incorporating Doric columns in classic style. Built in tribute to Cecil John Rhodes and his public contribution, this floodlit monument is guarded by 8 large lion statues, 4 on each side of the monuments 49 steps. The lions are a tribute to Cecil John Rhode's wish to have real lions roaming his African Garden.

The steps, making for fabulous re-enactments of your favourite training scene from Rocky, represent 1 step for each year of Cecil John Rhode's life. The Statue of Energy sculpts Rhodes on horseback at the base of the steps, an identical statue on display in London at Kensington Palace Gardens.

Rhodes Memorial and the View
The view from Rhodes Memorial

Close to the University of Cape Town and easily accessible entrance to the monument is free of charge and situated in a beautiful natural forest environment. A quick 10 minute look around provides a great view of scenery and architecture. An hour visit provides for the interesting reading of the historical plaques, the walking up and down on every step, time for some posing pictures of you on a lion's back overlooking 'your' land and a moment to sit on the viewing deck and contemplate just as Rhodes himself did.

Should you have a few hours numerous walking trails and hikes can be taken in the surrounding forest. Either type of visit can be refreshed with some tea and scones from the Rhodes Memorial restaurant and maybe a milkshake for the kids. The restaurant also has a log fire in winter and a selection of traditional South African meals should you want a substantial meal. The Restaurant is average, the View is great.
