Just five kilometres from the heart of Robertson in the Western Cape of South Africa lies the magnificent Buitehof Wine Farm. This farm is situated in the idyllic town of McGregor. Its name means “outside court”, which is apt as it was established about 50 years ago by Giepie van Zyl, who was an attorney in the city with the dream of escaping court and retreating to a picturesque wine farm of his own.
Today, Buitehof remains in the family, being run by the grandson of Giepie van Zyl, Gideon. Under his management, the wines produced here have achieved acclaim for their outstanding quality. Of course, these wines are best enjoyed on the farm, surrounded by the mountains and fynbos of the Winelands.
McGregor itself is the home of the architecture and charm of the mid-1800’s. Thatched cottages line the quaint streets in the small hub nestled amongst wine farms and ‘berge’.
During your time visiting Buitehof, there are a number of activities for the entire family. These include seeing the work of local artists, hiking or walking the many trails around the farm, and visiting one of the many popular restaurants.
