About Annex Kloof Wines

The tale of Annex Kloof Wines began when Mattys Basson first planted vineyards in 1907 and began producing wine in 1910. Hugo Bassoon followed in his great-grandfather’s footsteps and also made wine from 2005.

Four generations later, these wines are still a family business and continue flourishing within the Paardeberg of the Swartland. There are also five grandsons ready to take over from their fathers. The original farm, Annex Kloof, carries the meaning of ‘where the gorges meet’.

When visiting the farm, you will experience true Swartland hospitality. You may even spot Hugo in the vineyards farming with his brothers. He aims to produce elegant and powerful wines whilst not utilizing too much oak to aid the wine’s structure. He has a passion for red wines especially Malbec and guarantees that you’ll find warmth and great quality wines at their winery. He firmly believes that “life is too short to drink bad wine”.

His love affair with Malbec began after visiting Argentina. The winery became the first one in South Africa to plant it and today all five Malbec clones can be found on the farm. You can enjoy their Shiraz 2011, Pinotage 2010, Chenin Blanc 2012, Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 and their 2007 Red Blend.
