About Settlers Park Nature Reserve

Perched on the banks of the scenic Baakens River, deep in the valley of the same name, is the beautiful Settlers Park Nature Reserve. This reserve is situated in Mill Park the heart of Port Elizabeth, flanked by residential neighbourhoods, but secluded by the sheer abundance of its lush vegetation.

Did you know? In addition to the birdlife in Settlers Park, animals such as the rather large tortoises, meerkats, rabbits, small buck, mongoose, guinea fowls can be seen.

The Settlers Park Nature Reserve occupies 80 hectares, or almost 200 acres, and is the idyllic retreat for those with a penchant for the outdoors as well as day visitors wanting to explore the area on foot, indulge in a peaceful picnic, or take stunning wedding photographs here.

The reserve has three different entrances, each of which is located in a different part of Port Elizabeth. These are in How Avenue (Park Drive, behind the St George’s Hospital), Chelmsford Avenue (just off Target Kloof) and Third Avenue (in Walmer). Each of these entrances offers plenty of parking.

The many different floral species here mean that the Settlers Park Nature Reserve is the habitat of choice for a number of bird and animal species. Small antelope, tortoises, leguaans, rock rabbits (or dassies), and meerkats are commonly seen by those who explore the reserve on foot.

In addition, the park is famous for its large population of beautiful peacocks, whose characteristic call echoes through the valley with a haunting beauty. Bird watchers will be delighted when they spot weavers, sunbirds, flycatchers, woodpeckers, warblers, waxbills and kingfishers. Bring along your binoculars and a bird identification book to get the most out of this experience.

The flower display house gives keen botanists the opportunity to learn more about local vegetation, while the river and rock pools are refreshing places at which to rest and enjoy the sounds and smells of the countryside.

The Guinea Fowl Trail is a 7.5 kilometre one that extends from Third Avenue in Newton Park all the way through to Brickmaker’s Kloof. It is a one-way trail that is not demanding, and requires only a basic degree of fitness.

Visitors are advised to bring along plenty of sunscreen, and not to visit the reserve alone. Rather, bring along a group of friends or family members and enjoy the beautiful climate of the Eastern Cape together.
