Nieuwoudt Pass
The Nieuwoudt Pass is a dirt road that occurs roughly halfway between Citrusdal and Clanwilliam, off the N7. It is actually an alternative route to Clanwilliam and takes one past two well known and loved holiday camping sites – Algeria and Jamaka. It is indicated by a road sign that says 'Algeria Cederberg' that you need to keep a look out for on the N7.
The pass literally heads into the hills of the Cederberg, along a gravel road that is not bad to drive on, but in places needs caution. The scenery is quite beautiful, and the alternative to Clanwilliam worth taking, merely to drive for a while 'off the beaten track' and away from the constant stream of traffic on the N7.
At the bottom of the pass is Algeria together with a one kilometre section of tarred road. Here you take a left to reach Clanwilliam, and the road becomes slightly more worn. You should not have any problems in an ordinary sedan provided you are careful. Clanwilliam is roughly 30 kilometres from Algeria.
The only hinderance to one's drive on the Nieuwoudt Pass can occur during winter, when the Olifants River tends to flood the low water bridge at Kriedouwkrans.
