Biodiversity Showcase Garden, Green Point
Set in Cape Town's Green Point Urban Park (built in time for the World Cup), the Biodiversity Garden is an incredible space in which to immerse yourself in a selection of the unique flora indemic to Cape Town. It features no fewer than 300 local plant species, animal sculptures, interactive displays, demonstration gardens, a Khoikhoi display and more - the aim, not only to educate, but to inspire.
Even before the import of the plants and the various displays grab your attention, the setting does. Table Mountain, Signal Hill and the Green Point stadium that attracted so much attention all surround the garden. Three theme areas in the garden include people and plants, the discovering biodiversity trail and the wetland walk. In amongst the plants are displays, original art work created especially for the garden - including wire art, mosaics, ceramic statues and cut-out steel animals, and interpretive boards with illustrations and photographs. It is a feast for sore eyes.
Even though the garden has a strong message – to realise that much of Cape Town's biodiversity is unique and under threat particularly as Cape town is a biodiversity hotspot with many species occuring nowhere else in the world - it is also a space in which to spend time, not simply visit a garden; for families to play, for friends meeting friends and for time out. The entrance is free and it is available to all, sunrise to sunset. There is a Tot Lot, an adventure play area for children.
