Surfing in South Africaabseiling-01.jpg (32861 bytes)South Africa Surfing: Ask any South African surfer about the surf spots in South Africa and you’ll be set for the next hour as he relates hundreds of surf spots that never disappoint and that provide the ideal surf for any level of surfer.

South Africa boasts some of the best surfing spots in the world with sublime coastal scenery and a high quality surf. South Africa’s surf culture is first class and extremely popular! There are numerous awesome surf spots in South Africa - for the novice and the hardcore surf junkie.

KwaZulu Natal boasts a coast that is a veritable surfer's paradise. There are fantastic waves far and wide, including hollow beach breaks, points and a few classic reef breaks. The water temperature is warm all year round so the waves are always waiting for your riding skills - no wetsuit needed! The most consistent surf is found in the winter months from May through to August. This is mainly due to the cold fronts that sweep up the coast from the Cape, bringing solid six to eight-foot swells. In summer the swell tends to be a bit smaller with pleasurable surf available at the many beach breaks. Some hot surf spots in and around Durban are at New Pier, Bay of Plenty, Cave Rock, St Mike's, Umdloti, Ballito and Alkanstrand. Be sure not to miss them!

The Eastern Cape is home to some of the finest and most beautiful beaches. Port Elizabeth and East London have popular beaches with furious seas that attract millions to its glory. Hot spots in Port Elizabeth include King’s Beach and ‘the pipe’. The surf in Port Elizabeth, is for the most part rather small. However there are days during the year when freak swells hit the coast and provide for excellent surfing. In East London, be sure not to miss the legendary Nahoon Beach. Port St Johns is also a lovely and unspoilt stretch of tropical coastline.

Not to be missed is the world famous Jeffreys Bay. Home to the Billabong Pro surf event, this legendary right-hand break is by far the most consistent and well known surf spot in South Africa. Fans all over the world come to experience the famous breaks around this area and in nearby St Francis Bay.

In the Western Cape you will find some of the most famous and awesome sandy beaches. Camps Bay, Clifton, Bloubergstrand, Hermanus and Muizenberg all offer fantastic waves and picturesque scenery. Penguins and dolphins might join you too. Do not let the cold water deter you as the waves will be worth your while. (for in depth info about the beautiful beaches the Western Cape has to offer see Cape Town Beaches). The Garden Route is known for its natural and lush beauty along with its spectacular beaches. Plettenberg Bay is one of South Africa's favourite surfing playgrounds. It is home to two incredible beaches, Robberg and Lookout. The Wilderness promises furious seas and awesome waves. Also, be sure not to miss out on Victoria Bay just outside The Wilderness which boasts fantastic waves and hosts many great surfing competitions.

South Africa is home to pristine beaches and outstanding waves that will blow your mind. The coastline promises dazzling views and marine life.
