About Steenberg Peak Hike

Start: east side of Silvermine Nature Reserve Gate 2 parking area
Finish: parking area
Duration: roughly 4 hours, circular walk
Fitness: moderate
Our tip: there are unusual views out over Noordhoek on the return journey

Silvermine is divided by Ou Kaapse Weg. Head to Gate 2's parking area on the east side above Tokai, Muizenberg and Kalk Bay. Hiking to the top of Steenberg is not a strenuous hike and offers great views out over False Bay.

The access to fynbos is exceptional.

The hike is circular, which allows one to choose whether to do it in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. The recommended route is anti-clockwise as it avoids the uphill slog up Wolfkop, even though the path is more obvious in the other direction away from the jeep track. Most people though tend to do it in a clockwise direction.

The advantage, if indeed there is one, of taking it clockwise, is that you get the slog over with right at the start of the hike and you get views out over the Constantia Valley and Muizenberg sooner than you would taking the anti-clockwise route.

The hike is well signposted from Gate 2.

The clockwise route heads off steadily uphill through the lush valley fed by a stream, up Wolfkop steps. Keep your eyes peeled for fynbos and flowers in bloom, particularly in spring. You should begin seeing views from only part-way up over Silvermine West, Constantia and the back of Table Mountain.

Finally mount the summit to the plateau. As you head towards the radio mast, False Bay starts coming into view and the views are 360 degrees. On one side see all the way to Long Beach and Noordhoek, on the other to Marina da Gama and Muizenberg.

Rock formations up here are spectacular.

From here head up the gully between Splitkop and Steenberg Peak. You can then choose to extend your hike to Muizenberg Peak or descend past the radio masts to meet up with the jeep track, which heads back to Junction Pool, Maiden Pool and the car park.
