About Green Hub

If you are looking for fun things to do in Durban beyond the beach experience then head to the Green Hub.

Based at the Blue Lagoon in Durban, the Green Hub connects people with nature. It is one of the Durban Green Corridor information centres, there to provide information and a booking service for those after eco-tourist activities in the city - like canoeing, hiking, mountain biking, bird watching and cultural tours.

But it is far more than a tourism information centre.

Originally a 2010 Fifa World Cup green project the Green Hub lies close to the river mouth with great views out over the river. You can often spot pelicans or Goliath herons from the windows, but you've more chance of bird spotting from a canoe up the river.

The Green Hub is a 'green' building fitted with rainwater harvesting tanks, solar panels and natural lighting and ventilation. It hosts events that educate both adults and children about green technologies and a more sustainable way of living, and it hires out tour guides for guided canoe trails, bike rides and cultural tours.

The hub is manned by a team of enthusiastic and lively young staff members who are only to keen to help visitors plan their trips.

There is also a Green Hub Café that serves a mean cup of Illy coffee and a really affordable toasted sandwich (perfect stop on your way back north from the beachfront). It makes chinos, yoghurt smoothies, muffins, cakes and pastries. You can also order a box of fresh farm-grown vegetables to collect from the hub on Saturday mornings.

The team hires out canoes, mountain bikes and pedal cars, runs a youth programme to engage kids in ecology, provides school education packages and hires out a venue for events.

Find the Green Hub just off the M4. From Athlone Drive turn into Stiebel Place (just beyond the petrol garage on the corner of the M4 and Athlone Drive) and continue alongside the river to the far side of the parking area.
