About St Georges Strand
St Georges Strand is a lesser-known member of the Port Elizabeth beaches. This is due to its being rather far removed from the town centre, as well as the dangerous surf conditions. St Georges Strand is situated close to the industrial area of Nelson Mandela Bay, and extends up to the breakwater of the world-renowned Coega Harbour.
The water here is warm, typical of the Indian Ocean. It is frequented by bottlenose dolphins, who splash in the waters and surf the waves all year round. Between July and December, look out for whales, as they lobtail, breach and spyhop curiously.
While swimming is not advised, due to the wild waters, this does not deter the locals. Therefore, visitors are warned to be very cautious if they venture into these waters. Take note that there is a fairly long walk from the parking area to the beach.
