About Maremani Nature Reserve

Maremani Nature Reserve is a 41 000 hectare reserve north east of Johannesburg. It is owned by a charity foundation whose focus is to preserve nature and protect wildlife.

Did you know? With the single exception of lion, and possibly cheetah which are very rare, the reserve has good populations of all the other large predators (leopard, wild dog, spotted and brown hyena, side-striped and black-backed jackal).

A relatively unknown private nature reserve, Maremani lies in an arid to semi-arid tropic savannah, known as mapane veld or sweet bushveld, that refers to one of the major trees of the area - the Colophosermum mopane. The scenery is, by all accounts, spectacular.

Once farmland - by its nature, a poor use of land - Maremani is undergoing major rehabilitation, re-establishing the rich biodiversity that is natural to the area - a restitution of past neglect. A provincial road virtually bisects Maremani, although game-proof fences prevent animals from wandering from one half into the other.

Maremani is further divided into two sections. In the west is mountainous terrain peppered with valleys and a smattering of solitary springs, whilst through the undulating eastern section flows the Njelele River and a series of sandstone formations.

The greater Musina area, of which Maremani is part, gives rise to several world famous geological manifestations. Within the western parts of Maremani are very rare sapphirine bearing rocks, and some of the oldest rocks on Earth are preserved on the farm Bokveld within Maremani.

Expect to sight elephant, black and white rhino, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, wildebeest, hippos, warthog, eland, kudu, a vast array of antelope, crocodiles, leopard and a rich bird life. It is also reputed to be an excellent space in which to see black mambas, puff adders, boomslangs and other reptiles. Maremani offers controlled hunting.
