About Limpokwena Nature Reserve

Set between the mighty Limpopo and Mogalakwena rivers and on the border between South Africa and Botswana, Limpokwena Nature Reserve is home to not only 2500 hectares of riverine forest and mopane bushveld but also to a great concentration and diversity of birdlife and wildlife.

The ranch is more than 100 years old and obtained its name, which means “shelter”, from Scottish land surveyors. These surveyors were also responsible for naming the nearest town (about 40 km away) Alldays, when the locally brewed mampoer (moonshine) proved too much for them. Apparently, the one-day blurred into the next and it seems to these men that the nights were non-existent.

Limpokwena Nature Reserve offers luxury self catering, en-suite accommodation in air-conditioned suites. Its facilities include broad band Internet, mobile phone reception in a designated area. You may also enjoy our year-round sunshine and warm weather by lazing around the pool or spending time in the Jacuzzi.

Chalets (Sleeps 2-4) x 4:
The chalets consist of a King bed, with the option of adding an additional 2 single beds per room for children. There is an en-suite bathroom which consists of a shower. The chalets are free standing for additional privacy.

Family Cottage (Sleeps 6) x 1:
The self-catering family cottage is a self-contained unit consisting of a twin bedroom with an en-suite shower and toilet, with a main bedroom, kitchenette, and outside barbecue facility. There is also a spacious loft upstairs equipped.

Surrounding Area

Both the Limpopo and Mogalakwena Rivers offer unsurpassed beauty. Waterbuck, bushbuck, giraffe, leopard, elephant and crocodile as well as hippo families have made this their home. In the winter months when the Limpopo cease to flow, there is an abundance of game in the green riverbed area.

Kudu, blue wildebeest, impala, zebra and a multitude of bird life frequent the haven created by the water pools and huge trees. Often the cry of the fish eagle is heard. The Tuli Block in Botswana, which borders the reserve to the north, forms a beautiful backdrop of hills and natural bushveld.

Here there is a variety of open plains as well as hills. One hill in particular, called Eagle's Rock, offers spectacular views over the Limpopo River and the Tuli block. Eagle's Rock also houses a ruin of an ancient civilisation that must have been chosen it for both its strategic position as well as its magnificent view. A pair of rare Verreaux’s (Black) Eagles also breeds there, thereby putting the finishing touch to an already spectacular experience.

Some of the bird species that can be seen here include Marabou Storks, Yellow-billed and Saddle-billed Storks, Goliath Heron, Martial Eagle, Great-spotted Cuckoo and Senegal Coucal. At night you can hear Rufous-cheeked European Nightjars or even Pearl-spotted and Spotted Eagle-Owl.

Other birds that can be found include Meyer’s Parrot, Broad-billed Roller, Dusky Lark, Meves’s Starling, Tropical Boubou and Lark-like Bunting.

Limpokwena Nature Reserve's dedication to its natural environment, together with that of pampered luxury, ensures that it retains its reputation as a paradise built in beauty!
