About Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St George
Not the more-famous Anglican St George’s Cathedral at the top end of Adderley Street in the city centre of Cape Town, this lesser-known, but no less beautiful, ‘other’ St George’s Cathedral (also known as the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St George) lies in Woodstock.
Did you know? Tucked away in a little spot in Woodstock but it is worth a visit for its Byzantine-style frescoes ...
The Greek Orthodox Cathedral, built around 1904, has the most beautiful light blue domed ceilings dotted with stars. Its neo-classically designed building was originally built for Cape Town’s Greek community, perched part-way up the hill on Mountain Road.
It might lie tucked away in a little spot in Woodstock but it is worth a visit for its Byzantine-style frescoes, painted by the Romanian priest and hagiographer Father Nikolai during the 1990s with funding from the congregation. For most of the cathedral’s life before that the insides were a plain white.
The nativity scene is displayed in the nave and an image of Jesus rests in the sanctuary, the stained glass windows refract the morning light beautifully, and if you can manage to time it with a service then the chanting, white robes and incense evoke images of blue seas and white washed houses.
