The Kaaimans River is a stunning waterway in the Garden Route; which is a gorgeous part of the Western Cape that has gained worldwide acclaim for its fauna, flora and sheer beauty. The river is a popular spot for canoeing or simply as a cool retreat during the hot Western Cape summers. The river mouth is particularly pretty, and the beach inviting. However, the Kaaimans River is known for something quite special too. As the river winds and wends its way through the countryside, it makes the unmistakable outline of the African continent around the foot of the hill. One can only really appreciate this quirky feature when one views the river from above. The Map-of-Africa is, then, a viewpoint that allows visitors to get a bird’s eye perspective of this natural wonder.

The Map-of-Africa is situated at Wilderness Heights, which is between the Garden Route towns of Knysna and George. From the N2 motorway (heading from Knysna and towards George), turn right into George Road in Wilderness. Then, follow the road to the T-junction before turning left again. There is an information board with directions on it, making it easy to find. The last part of the road is well-maintained gravel, so this lookout point is accessible to all, not requiring a 4 x 4 vehicle.

In addition to being able to admire the unique scale and splendour of the river and its shape, visitors to the Map-of-Africa are also able to watch as paragliders soar overhead. The mountains and forests that characterise this part of South Africa are laid out in a perfect exhibition of the Garden Route’s exquisite appeal, waiting to be savoured by locals and international tourists that value the natural wealth of this country.

The Garden Route has so much to offer folks that are travelling along the coastline of South Africa. Knysna is a popular holiday town that has consistently been voted one of the best places to live on the continent. It is full of amazing restaurants, and visitors to the town are urged to go on a cruise on the lagoon, to the iconic Knysna Heads. George is in the opposite direction, and is home to a massive mall (perfect for those wanting to get their retail fix) as well as to the George Airport.

The Map-of-Africa is, therefore, in the perfect position for those en route between the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape, as well as for those staying nearby. A stop here may be coupled with a whale watching tour, a hike or a cycle on one of the many nearby trails. When visiting the Map-of-Africa, remember to take along a costume, sunglasses, sunscreen and comfortable shoes. A camera and binoculars may also come in handy to get the most out of the gorgeous vistas and stunning backdrops.
