Haven't found your calling? Don't panic there is still time until the next Winter Olympics and the Durban Ice Rink welcomes all levels of ability.
A perfect activity for Durban's hot sticky days or for some family bonding. Leisure skating is a fun work-out for all with kids having a shorter distance to fall and grown-ups having more padding to absorb the impact. Public sessions are ideal for a holiday glide when neglecting to re-apply sun-block beachside has left you in need of a hide-out from the sun. Spectators are welcome, so if skating on thin ice is not for you, take a seat in the grand stand and nibble on some snacks from the shop while snapping photos for the family 'Seasons Greeting' cards.
Friday and Saturday nights are party sessions with a live DJ mixing cool tunes to glide to; but for the sake of the family please wait until the little ones have taken the corner before busting out the moves from your glory days - even if it is 80's music playing.
Coaching is available for ice-hockey and figure skating and if all goes well you can join the club. Probably the only place in KwaZulu Natal that you can wear your gloves, so bring them along with thick socks. Matching reindeer family sweaters are optional but be sure to wear something comfy and warm and bring a change of clothes for the ride home. Skates are for hire or bring your own blades, but either way take to the ice.
