There are fewer things written about in poetry, folklore and legends that still feature as a well recognised symbol in a modern day period of cutting edge engineering. Few things that have led to major scientific discoveries, formed part of military espionage, warded off invisible spirits and been around for over thirty centuries as a birthday gift for an innocent child. Few things that can present themselves as a geometric shape; a gigantic butterfly or an adrenalin surge . Few things that come out on days the other stay in. Few things that were outlawed in the eighteenth century as they distracted shopkeepers and welcomed in the 21st century as they distracted the youth. Few things that led to the invention of aeroplanes and the flight of dreams. Few things that sail on a beach, or mountain top. Few things that come in every colour under the rainbow and fly in front of the sun.

Few things used for sending meteorological instruments aloft and have been used to pull boats, ice-skaters, sleds and carriages. Few things that have made it into record books, history books and picture books. Few things that have made a household name out of Wilbur and Orville Wright, Benjamin Franklin, Gugliemo Marconi, Alexander Graham Bell, Homan Walsh, Leonardo da Vinci and Mary Poppins who sang it best with the lyrics.
