Durban's beachfront may have undertaken itself as 'The Golden Mile' but it has understated itself under blue skies that reflect this Indian Ocean stretch for over four golden miles from the mouth of the Umgeni River in the North to the southern Bluff. A 500m pier reaches out to shake the hand of the currents harbour side at Vetch's Pier which rises up at low tide to expose it's seabed structure.
Make a friendly bet to see if your ice-cream can last the length of a pier stroll curving half a kilometre into the KwaZulu Natal horizon. From this nautical observation point, 800m North of Durban Harbour, experience a new self perspective as your own silhouette becomes smaller the closer you get to the big outline of approaching ships coming in to berth. Your elevated position will keep you safe from Scorpion Fish and Lion Fish that clearer winter waters make visible below. The 22°C seawater ranging 3-6 metres in depth under pier pleases tropical fish, crayfish and scuba divers alike. This man-made construction was the costly failed attempt of Captain James Vetch to build a breakwater which has subsequently become a great diving reef by default... and all the scuba divers cheer 'Go Vetch!'.
