The heart, red and bloody, pounds across the sterile table causing yours to hit hard against your chest. Your eyes sparkle with adrenalin as you make out your own silhouette in the glazed eye of the predator. Your hand rises with desire to brush against the rough leathery skin curious to touch the grain that caresses like sandpaper but the bladed teeth still protruding and hungry with bite even in their death keep you at spectator's distance.
This live dissection of a dead shark at the Natal Sharks Board is enough to loop the Jaw's soundtrack in your mind for weeks to come but the simultaneous education of the vital role that sharks play in the natural ecosystem coupled with the truth that leaving our territory for a splash in the water we trespass in their territory; one is left feeling sympathetic and responsible.
The only institution of its kind in the world, the Natal Sharks Boards (NSB) services a 320km strip of shark nets and newly deployed drumlines along the KwaZulu Natal coastline leaving sun worshippers, beach-goers and surfers enjoying the warm waves of the Indian Ocean. The Natal Sharks Board research and conservation programmes have developed harmless methods like the electrical shark repellent to keep divers safe and this magnificent apex predator around for generations to respect. NSB welcomes visitors to the 25 minute audiovisual display of their day to day work followed by a 20 minute shark dissection.
