The Department of Historical Papers was established in 1966 and is located in the William Cullen Library of the University of the Witwatersrand. Historical Papers is one of the largest and most comprehensive independent archives in Southern Africa.
The department is a unique and accessible hub for human rights research serving civil society as well as scholars and researchers in order to retrieve the rich historical heritage belonging to all South Africans. Today, the department of historical papers holds over 3000 separate collections of historical, political and cultural importance. Included are the records of many human rights NGOs, trade unions, labour federations, political parties, women's organisations, churches and church bodies, and the papers of human rights activists. Many of these documents reflect struggles from the early 20th century through to today.
