Take a Ride on the Outeniqua Choo-Choo

One of the top attractions on the entire Garden Route, the Outeniqua Choo-Choo Steam Train provides some of the best views of the Garden Route coastline and hidden valleys inaccessible by car.

First opened in 1928, the 68km Outeniqua Choo-Choo is the last fully operational steam train in South Africa and * chugs across the Knysna lagoon into the verdant valleys and lakeside settings that lead to Wilderness, where it traverses the Kaaimans River gorge, past Victoria Bay to Knysna. Most locomotives date back to 1948 (though some are over a century old) with timber-and-leather-fitted carriages dating from 1903 to 1950. Grab a window seat, the views really are quite spectacular!

Please Note:
* Regrettably, the George / Knysna line is still closed after heavy rain caused severe damage to the infrastructure during August 2006 and again in November 2007. In the meantime the George / Mossel Bay service continues. Please phone the published telephone numbers with any questions you might have.
