The Garden Route remains one of South Africa’s most beautiful attractions; and for good reason. It is alive with magnificent fauna and flora, assuring visitors from all over the word of spectacular vistas and magnificent photographs.
One of the more exciting and novel ways to experience the prettiness and variety of this part of South Africa is on the local horse trails. These wend through forests and past waterfalls, all from the excellent vantage point of a powerful, responsive horse.
The Garden Route Horse Trails take place in the Garden Route National Park and its immediate surrounds, near Wilderness. There are a number of well-trained horses here, and they are chosen according to the individual abilities and preferences of the riders. The optimal pace of the horses, their power and their ability to negotiate the terrain make them the ideal travelling companions and transport providers. Visitors are sure to love the personal interaction with these magnificent animals as they amble through the countryside with an experienced guide.
There are a number of trails. The 90 minute ride goes through the gum tree forest, while the two-hour ride takes visitors further into the pine forests. The longest trail, which takes around three hours to complete, includes a break at the tumbling cascades of the waterfall. Cool off, have a swim and enjoy some refreshments in the heart of the forest. You are free to bring your own snacks and drinks, or these can be provided with prior notice.
In addition, rides for special occasions (such as an engagement or anniversary) can be arranged in advance and make for treasured memories.
The Garden Route Horse Trails are open every day all year around. Bookings are essential to ensure that the horses are available. Usually, the trails are conducted at 10h00 and 14h00 every day, but these times can be adjusted to suit the needs of the visitors.
