Raggy Charters is the only licensed boat-based whale watching vessel in Port Elizabeth offering customers a 3-4 hour boat ride where you’ll have the opportunity to see whales, dolphins, seals, sharks, penguins and other seabirds. It is one of the oldest marine eco tour companies to be found in South Africa and has strong links with conservation and research of the marine life of Algoa Bay.
During whale season (from June to November) you’ll go out in to the open ocean to spot Southern right whales and humpback whales making their yearly migration up the East coast. You’ll get to see these majestic creatures up close as they breach and play in the ocean.
Out of whale season guests are taken to St Croix Island which is home to the largest breeding colony of African penguins on the planet. Though sleek and agile in water, these animals can be quite comical on land, and you can also see penguin chicks during breeding season (March-May).
During all trips guests have the possibility of seeing bottlenose, common and humpback dolphins, seals, sharks, bryde’s whales, minke whales and cape gannets. All of which can often be seen participating in feeding frenzies on bait balls which is quite a sight.
The majority of trips are run by the owner of Raggy Charters, Lloyd Edwards, who is a world renowned oceanographer, knowledgeable conservationist, wildlife educator and marine safari specialist. So customers can expect expert information on the marine life in Algoa Bay.
