Bryanston Golf Course at Bryanston
Country Club in Bryanston, Sandton, Johannesburg: Bryanston Drive, Bryanston. The
cover is cynodon, which is a strain of bent grass. Another feature of the Bryanston Golf
course is the abundance of water hazards and it's possible to 'dunk one in the drink' on
all but five of the 18 holes.
The Golf Course: The Bryanston Golf Course plays to an unusual par 73 and is
6,576 metres long. With 13 of the 18 holes featuring water hazards, Bryanston Country Club
presents an exacting challenge. Birdies are at a premium and hitting the fairways and the
greens is an art to be mastered.
A round at Bryanston begins in unusual fashion with two par-fives, followed by the
412-metre par-four 3rd hole which is stroke one on the card. This is a tight driving hole
where water is very much in play, making for an exacting tee shot played with a great deal
of confidence.
The approach is exceptionally demanding as the green is a narrow one from front to back.
This puts a high premium on club selection and accuracy. The 403-metre par-four 16th is
another very good test. Here, the trick is to avoid the water hazard on the left, before
crossing more water on the approach.
