Lanseria Airport, Gauteng
When kulula began operating daily flights to and from Cape Town and Durban from Lanseria Airport in 2005, Lanseria Airport, formerly regarded by all and sundry as merely a grass airstrip somewhere in the northern reaches of Johannesburg, began to play a more serious role in the minds of travellers in and around South Africa. Another low-cost airline, 1time, joined the ranks in late 2010 when the five-year exclusivity agreement between Lanseria and kulula came to an end.
As a result there is talk that Lanseria Airport will build a new runway, a multi-storey parkade and improve its shuttle service – the domestic terminal at Lanseria Airport is almost at capacity. No surprise, really, as Lanseria has a prime spot north west of Johannesburg. In 1972 it was way out of town but today, development in Johannesburg has placed Lanseria Airport close to Midrand, the northern suburbs of the city, and within easy reach of Sandton.
Today, kulula flies more travellers from Lanseria Airport than from OR Tambo International Airport. Certainly, if John Travolta's descent into Lanseria just before the World Cup is anything to go by, VIPs prefer landing at the smaller airport to secure their anonymity. Apparently the country's heads of state make a point of landing here too.
