Just outside Johannesburg in Boksburg, the East Rand Flea Market lies right next to the East Rand Mall, and as a result, is open just about all week, except for Mondays, to sell its wares to shoppers, who delight in the array of goods that range from African artwork, to any number of handcrafted goods, a budding home industry, and just about any type of plastic gadget known to man.

Johannesburg’s flea markets are typically and uniquely South African and the East Rand Flea Market is no exception. Each of them usually has a wide range of African art that includes street wire art, wooden carvings, beaded dolls and the ubiquitous drum. Jewellery, clothing, ceramics and any quantity of cheap mass-produced goods are also part of the bargain. And in the case of the East Rand Flea Market one needs to keep a look out for counterfeit DVDs and playstation games.

The East Rand mall, situated virtually across the road from the flea market, means that shopping certainly doesn’t have to end once you’ve browsed your way through the stalls and stopped at one of the numerous food vendors for a hot dog, boerewors roll or samoosa. There is a host of major chain stores, specialist stores and any number of coffee shops, restaurants and a nine theatre movie house from which to choose.
