North West Province Hiking Trails - The North West Province in South Africa is a "must-do" hiking destination. This province offers numerous game reserves with fantastic hiking trails. The Leon Taljaard Nature Reserve in Vryburg offers numerous fantastic hiking trails. Die Grot hiking trail is a 30 km 2 day hike with accommodation and awesome game viewing. There are also 2 day hikes which offer the awesome opportunity to sleep in a cave. Bring along friends and family and cuddle by a cosy fire whilst sipping hot chocolate and chatting about the day’s hiking adventures.
Vredefort Dome in Venterskroon offers a fantastic 2 day hike which offers magnificent bird watching and tree spotting. You will also visit the largest meteorite impact crater in the world and the shimmering Vaal River. The Boe Boe’s Nest consists of 13km circular trails in the Koster region. This beautiful hike takes you across rivers and visits awe-inspiring waterfalls. The Dome Trails Conservation Group in the Vredefort dome has created a network of fantastic hiking trails one of which is the Rooihaas Hiking Trail, named after Smith's Red Rock Rabbit which occurs in the rocky areas in the hills. This magnificent hike leads you through rivers, lush indigenous forests and over rocky hills offering spectacular scenery. You will also view the amazing water birds that live and feed on the mud banks and in the reeds next to the shimmering Vaal River and geological sites.
The Kranskloof is a 18km, 2 day hike in Rustenburg and takes you through the magnificent kloofs and interesting rock formations onto the Magaliesberg region which boasts spectacular scenery.
The majestic Magaliesberg mountains is home to Kgaswane Mountain Reserve. This reserve offers the Summit trail which is a 2 day backpack hiking trail and covers a distance of just over 25 km with the awesome opportunity of seeing the rare and shy Sable antelope, Zebra and many other fantastic game species. The trail starts ascending the mountains almost immediately and visits the magnificent Tierkloof Waterfall. Stop for a while and take time to swim and relax in this little piece of heaven.
Mateke Game Farm and Hiking Trails is situated on a farm close to the iron ore town of Thabazimbi. From the Tree Camp, there are two trails that stretch out across different areas of the beautiful game farm. The Koedoe trail is 17kms long and takes the hiker up into the majestic mountains where beautiful panoramic views can be seen from the top. The second trail is the Njala trail and consists of a route that mostly follows the course of the glistening river with pools suitable for swimming in. This trail is 13 km long.
