About Wagon Trail
If you want to see old ox wagon trails, stunning scenery and enjoy nature around you then you should visit the Wagon Trail on Sir Lowry’s Pass.
In the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve above Sir Lowry’s Pass village you will find the Gantouw or Eland Pass which used to follow the course of and old game track.
Proclaimed a national monument in 1958, here you can see the old grooves left behind by many weary travelers. The furrows chiseled into the rocks tell a sad tale of heartbreak and struggle endured whilst traveling up this perilous route where oxen were often killed and wagons smashed along the way.
There are two fabulous hiking trails in the area challenging climbers and allowing you the opportunity to explore the area and admire the vast a mounts of Fynbos around. Makes sure you stop at the viewpoint at the summit where often you will see paragliders launching.
Please be aware that there are baboons in the area so it is advisable to walk in groups of two or more and to take caution.
