The Harry Molteno Library was established in 1913, but has grown and moved several times since then. Its name’s sake was a key player in establishing the Molteno Trust, which provided much-needed funds to the Kirstenbosch Research Centre. This centre is a very important aspect of these famous botanical gardens, as it allows an insight into the region as well as a resource for studies conducted.
Today, the library boasts about 8 000 books, 750 journal titles, 5 000 pamphlets, CD’s, videos and microfiches. There are approximately 20 000 journal articles that cover a wide array of articles on South African flora. Subject matter covered includes biodiversity, conservation, ecology, climate change, taxonomy, the history of botany and more.
Everything is well indexed, making the library easy to navigate and use.
Visiting the Library: Members of the public, learners and students are welcome to use the library for research purposes. Photocopying facilities are available.
