About Kalahari Craft Beer

The Kalahari Desert is a harsh environment, where the heat and arid starkness permeate every aspect of the hardy fauna and flora. Even the root of the word “Kalahari” means “the great thirst”. So, it is apt that this has inspired the folk behind Kalahari Craft Beer to create a range of handmade brews that are sure to quench even the most resilient of thirsts. Or, at the very least, make some avid beer-lovers very happy to sip.

Based in Upington (Northern Cape Province of South Africa), the Kalahari Craft Beer brewery pays homage to various South African species with their two signature beers. These are:

The Gemsbok Lager
The gemsbok is known for being particularly hardy, able to survive very dry conditions. The cold crashing brewing method used to produce the lager makes it unique, and the excellent flavour is achieved only through patience.

The Puff Adder Weiss
Although the puff adder is one of the continent’s deadliest creatures, this delicious weiss is not. It is so named for the welcome hiss as you crack a cold one open and let the smooth crispness refresh you.

Renier, the man behind the brewery, was once a keen wine maker. However, he now favours the versatility and variety of beer. He established Kalahari Craft Beers in 2016, and enjoys serving his creations to hot, thirsty travellers on their way to and from the desert. It is his passion and keen interest in beers that makes his such a rewarding brewery to visit.

Upington is home to a number of wine farms. So travellers that feel like going on a beer and wine adventure are spoilt for choice in the area. It is situated on the verdant banks of the Orange River, which makes it a particularly pretty part of an otherwise tough terrain.
