About Soweto Theatre
Soweto was the largest township in South Africa before its incorporation into Johannesburg. Today, the Soweto Theatre is owned by the City of Joburg and has kept a tight grip on its long-standing tradition of community theatre. By celebrating and supporting this unique art form, the Soweto Theatre is an important part of the contemporary culture and identity of South Africa.
This theatre was a legacy project of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. Its complex, which has become iconic in the community, is situated in the vibey cultural precinct known as Jabulani. More than just a theatre perched in the community, this complex has been established to respect and even incorporate the spirit of local vendors and hustlers, as well as of the larger business of Jabulani Mall. Such a multifaceted approach has been really effective in portraying the variety and beauty of South Africa in terms of its art, culture and, most importantly, people.
The Soweto Theatre enjoys modern technology and ample room. The pricing for the venue hire is competitive to encourage artists and producers to use the facilities and get the most out of them. This, in turn, means that those visiting the theatre will get to see some of South Africa’s most cutting edge performers, budding artists, and seasoned pros.
To maximise opportunities for locals and visitors to experience South African theatre here, the Soweto Theatre has scheduled shows at 10h00, 15h00 and 20h00, from Tuesday to Sunday. The only times that this will not be the case are during October and early January, when the theatre will be closed for its annual maintenance. The first three weeks of the month are dedicated to theatrical performances, while the last week will incorporate comedy shows, musical performances, and screenings of African films.
The dynamic Soweto Theatre pays homage to and celebrates the important work of the artists of yesteryear, and is committed to showcasing those of tomorrow.
