The artisanal brewery in the Johannesburg hub of Maboneng, known as SMACK! Republic, is all about innovation, quality and a liberal dose of rebellion. Smack Republic is situated in a part of east Johannesburg that has been revamped under the urban renewal umbrella, and is seeing more and more of a young, fun vibe as it continues to grow and move up in the social ranks.

SMACK! Republic is committed to treating its unique brews like “craft royalty”. The grains and hops are hand-selected, and are then mashed and boiled in top-notch stainless steel brew pots to ensure the finest flavours and the best conditions for a unique, even quirky, approach to craft beers. Some of these brews include the Newtown Nemesis (a milk stout that has been infused with bourbon and vanilla), Bree Street Belle (an easy drinking golden ale), Maboneng Maverick (a South African-cum-Belgian-inspired wheat beer infused with naartjie and black pepper), Hillbrow Honey (a pale ale with nuances of rooibos and bluegum honey), and the Braamfontein Brawler (an Indian pale ale with distinctive citrus and pine nuances).

However, this brewery does more than simply produce delicious beers. They host regular food and beer pairings, showcasing the possibilities that exist when those who appreciate good food and a tasty drink open their minds to new flavour combinations, bringing out the best in both the food and the amber brew. Every month, SMACK! Republic plays host to a number of the best artists, musicians and photographers from all over Johannesburg, who share their own creativity and innovation with one another while savouring the flavours of some other truly South African art forms.

SMACK! Republic is open every Sunday from 10h00 until 15h00 and is situated in the Arts on Main building. Visitors are invited to see the working brewery, chat to the owners, and sample some of the finest brews in Jozi.
