About the The Toy Run

The end of the year is often a time of gift-giving for families and friends around the world. And this spirit of giving has prompted tens of thousands of motorcyclists from biking clubs and chapters around South Africa to join forces and spoil less fortunate children in the local communities at the annual Toy Run.

This tradition is some 35 years old and has been hosted by various cities and towns throughout the country. In the Southern Cape, it will be held in the vibrant coastal town of Mossel Bay on Sunday, 26 November 2017. The proud hosts are the South Western District Motorcycling Association (SWDMCA), but it is also heavily supported by many of the biking clubs and members of the public.

This event is completely geared towards and based on charity, so the organisers of the Toy Run need the support of the local communities for the initiative to work. Mossel Bay’s businesses and tourism-related industries are especially important to the cause, as are those in the surrounding areas of George, Knysna and the rest of the Garden Route. Prizes and special gifts for the children are in huge demand for the Toy Run, and the help of local businesses and individuals will be hugely appreciated.

Instead of the usual teddies, there will be a shift towards more practical gifts for the children. These include feminine products for girls, toiletries for both boys and girls, stationery, sports equipment, school bags, educational toys, rucksacks, books and audio CD’s, and, of course, toys to snuggle up with at night. Because there is such a great need for these, used items that are in good condition will also be accepted. The Toy Run organising committee has heard that the shortage is so dire that the some children even need to share a toothbrush in one of the local children’s homes, underscoring the desperation and magnitude of the situation.

Cash donations are also welcomed, and will be spent on improving the lives and resources of these little ones.
