Lansdowne, Southern Suburbs
The suburb of Lansdowne lies east of the M5, right next door to Rondebosch East and Crawford, bordered to the south by Race Course Road and to the north by Lawson Road. It is connected to Claremont and the more westerly southern suburbs - that lie beneath the mountain - by a road of the same name.
Lansdowne Road is a landmark. It runs from the junction with Palmyra Road, close to Claremont station, all the way east over the M5 where it continues through Lansdowne before turning south east to head off through other parts of the Cape Flats like Nerissa Estate, Turf Hall, Buckingham and Yorkshire Estate.
It joins Cape Town's southern suburbs with Khayelitsha and Gugulethu, and ends in Macassar Road close to the Strandfontein coastline. It's a very long road. And important as it forms part of the city's proposed Wetton Road-Lansdowne Road corridor. A new shopping mall is already under construction as part of this new development corridor.
The idea is part of a large plan for the Cape Flats that will develop areas like Landsdowne, Athlone, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Ottery, Grassy Park, Lavender Hill, Pelican park etc. linking residents directly to centralised economic hubs of activity.
