Once inhabited by indigenous tribes, the region gained acclaim when a child's fossilised skull was found at the Buxton Quarry in 1924 by Professor Dart. This was named Australopithecus Africanus, which translates to "the southern ape of Africa".

Taung is a little town situated in the southern part of the North West Province, South Africa, which is part of the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality. In fact, this is believed by many anthropologists and other scientists to be the site of the first human being, enforcing the notion that Africa is the origin of humankind.
