About Taung Heritage Site
Once inhabited by indigenous tribes, the region gained acclaim when a child's fossilised skull was found at the Buxton Quarry in 1924 by Professor Dart. This was named Australopithecus Africanus, which translates to "the southern ape of Africa".
Did you know? The Blue Pools, surrounded by caves and waterways are situated nearby, and provide the idyllic spot for a picnic or barbecue against the backdrop of some of Africa's most spectacular limestone valleys.
Taung is a little town situated in the southern part of the North West Province, South Africa, which is part of the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality. Once inhabited by indigenous tribes, the region gained acclaim when a child's fossilised skull was found at the Buxton Quarry in 1924 by Professor Dart. This was named Australopithecus Africanus, which translates to “the southern ape of Africa”.
The Taung Heritage Site is situated at the quarry and remains an area of enormous archaeological import. More than this, it is also a fascinating place for visitors to explore and to learn about the ancient history of southern Africa and the civilisations that preceded modern societies. In fact, this is believed by many anthropologists and other scientists to be the site of the first human being, enforcing the notion that Africa is the origin of humankind.
The Taung Heritage Site perfectly combines history and heritage with the natural splendour of this ancient land.
