About Algeria Forest Station Short Walks

Our tip: no matter how short the walk, remember the sunscreen and a hat
There are two ways to reach Algeria Forest Station: the first is to take the central Cederberg Road, roughly 30 km outside of Citrusdal, over the low water bridge (check in spring that the Oliphants River is not in flood, making this road impassable) and then over the pass. The other is to take the Clanwilliam Dam road and turn left to Algeria.
Combining the two in a there-and-back drive makes a wonderful day trip. Stop for a picnic and hike at the forest station and then return.
The forest station is not only the start of a number of hikes. You can also camp or picnic here the Rondegat River has a natural swimming hole that is easy to get to.
Short valley walk
An easy walk from Algeria up the valley in the direction of Uitkyk that is easy to do and well sign-posted. It begins at the edge of the campsite. Ignore the path off to the left to the waterfall. Continue on through a pine forest. Return when you have gone far enough.
Waterfall walk
This 45 minute walk is a quick climb up to Middleberg waterfall (link to hike already written).
Longer hike to Middleberg hut
This is a bit of a steep climb, during which the path zigzags its way up the mountain. Head along the side path to the waterfall. From here the path climbs steeply again until it reaches the top of the mountain. From here it is not far to reach the hut. You can have a lunch break at a stream close to the hut and then return.
Uitkyk walk
This is also clearly marked and heads up to the Uitkyk Forestry house. Start in similar fashion to the waterfall and valley hikes, give the fork a skip, continuing through a grove of pine trees and on to Uitkyk (roughly 3.5 km). To add variety you can head back along the road.
