The Boskop Dam Nature Reserve might be a little on the small side, but it is a regular haunt for locals in the area and highly cherished for the escape value factor it offers.

Did you know? Boskop Dam is best known as an angling water and is host to a number of fishing competitions.

Boskop Dam is a fishing destination of note, offers yachtsmen and conoeists the opportunity to cleave the surface of the water, and the Boskop Dam Reserve is home to a rare species called Lithops lesliei. Known as the Lesliei living stone, it is a group of almost stemless succulent perennials that look just like a stone.

Situated about 20 kilometres from Potchefstroom, Boskop Dam, upon which most of the town’s residents depend for drinking water, lies amongst a series of low hills. It is a fantastic fly-fishing venue, offering crystal clear waters to spot smallmouth yellows, and one can also fish for largemouth and smallmouth bass, barbell and the monstrous carp, although shore fishing is a little frustrating; one needs a boat or dingy to really fish effectively.

Fishermen get to know this beautiful stretch of water quite intimately, and the dam wall offers some of the best fishing because of the rock and building rubble which attracts the bass and barbell.

The nature Boskop Dam Nature Reserve is 3000 hectares of rolling grasslands that offer visitors sightings of black wildebeest, springbok, red hartebeest, zebra and blesbok.

Picnic spots are aplenty, and there is a rather basic campsite, but watch out for winter evenings as these can be particularly chilly.
