About Visit the Klerksdorp Museum

The Klerksdorp Museum occupies the historic Old Klerksdorp Prison in Klerksdorp, North West. The town's original prison was constructed from unbaked clay bricks, and security was remarkably relaxed, with doors rarely locked. During the 1880s, before Klerksdorp had its own hospital, the building also served an unexpected role by accommodating patients who required medical care.

The discovery of gold between 1886 and 1888 transformed the region, attracting thousands of prospectors to the flourishing goldfields. As the population rapidly increased, the existing prison was no longer adequate, making the construction of a larger and more secure facility essential.

The new sandstone prison was designed by the renowned Dutch-born architect Sytze Wierda of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, whose work can still be admired in several prominent public buildings in Pretoria, Klerksdorp, Johannesburg and Krugersdorp. Completed in 1891, the prison later served as a holding facility for prisoners of war during the Second Anglo Boer War of 1899 to 1902, when Klerksdorp changed hands several times between British and Boer forces.

Although the prison remained in operation until May 1973, no executions were ever carried out within its walls. In 1978, the building began a new chapter as a Cultural History Museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing the heritage of the surrounding region. Today, the Klerksdorp Museum presents an engaging journey through the history and cultural diversity of the people who have shaped the City of Matlosana. Alongside the preserved prison cells, which offer insight into life in an Apartheid-era correctional facility, visitors can explore a variety of thoughtfully curated exhibitions celebrating the communities that have contributed to the city's development.

Among the Museum's highlights is a distinctive rock art exhibition, the only one of its kind in the North West Province, which explores the rich cultural traditions of the ancient Khoi-Khoi and San communities who inhabited this landscape for thousands of years. A permanent exhibition, introduced in July 2022, honours the enduring legacy of the region's earliest inhabitants and settlers, including the San, Khoi-Khoi, Tswana and Voortrekkers.

Visitors can also admire an impressive collection of 19th Century horse, mule and ox-drawn vehicles, while a recently upgraded exhibition celebrates the vibrant heritage and contributions of South Africans of Indian descent. The Museum further features a fascinating exhibition dedicated to the Second Anglo Boer War, examining the events that shaped modern South Africa and highlighting the peace negotiations held in April 1902 along the banks of the Skoonspruit, near the present-day N12 crossing.

Completing the experience is the Warders House on the Museum grounds, where carefully preserved interiors provide an authentic glimpse into domestic life during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

Guided tours can be arranged for groups of five or more by prior appointment from Monday to Saturday during the Museum's operating hours. Throughout the year, the Museum also hosts live blacksmithing demonstrations several times, offering visitors the opportunity to experience this traditional craft in action. Details of upcoming demonstrations are announced through public media.
