SCHOEMANSVILLE

Schoemansville: The lovely village of Schoemansville, one of the oldest suburbs lying around Hartbeespoort Dam, is positioned directly as one exits the elaborate bridge and tunnel that serves as passage over the dam. This part of the world is extremely picturesque. The Magaliesberg mountain range is a striking backdrop, whilst the body of glimmering water lies in the foreground. Yachts bob on the water at the Schoemansville yacht club, and the dam has become something of a mecca for city dwellers from Jo’burg and Pretoria alike over weekends.

Hartbeespoort Dam has mushroomed in the last few years. What was once referred to as Hartbeespoort Dam is now a collection of suburbs that include Schoemansville - the original town - Kosmos, Meerhof, Melodie and Ifafi. Initially intended as agricultural land, the dam has now become a playground for the affluent, and the area is virtually synonymous with Sundays in Gauteng - a gentle meander out to Harties, with numerous stops at various venues and places of interest. There’s a zoo, a bird sanctuary, a snake park, restaurants that include the likes of the quaint Tan’ Malie se Winkel, markets and stalls.

If you want to venture further afield, there is no shortage of things to do. You can hike, climb and abseil in the Magaliesberg, visit the Cradle of Humankind, the Lesedi cultural village or the De Wildt cheetah research centre; or take a cable car up to the top of the Magaliesberg and survey the patchwork quilt that is this beautiful part of the world.
