Rhino Tracking in South Africa
Rhino Tracking at Jock Safari Lodge (Kruger National Park)abseiling-01.jpg (32861 bytes)Rhino Tracking in South Africa: The South African rhino - whilst massively powerful with a foreboding presence, is still endearing to most animal lovers. Although the rhino weighs in at around 2 tons and stands approximately 1.8m tall, it is far from cumbersome and slow. The South African rhino can reach speeds of up to 60km/hr over short distances! Unfortunately this incredible animal has been under threat and the South African rhino population declined from about 65 000 in 1970 to a mere 2 400 in 1995. Most of the world’s Black Rhino population occurs in South Africa, Namibia, Kenya and Zimbabwe.

Hundreds of South African Game Reserves are protecting the few rhinos still left in their natural habitat. What better way to explore these amazing and delightful animals than to go on a rhino tracking Safari in South Africa. For successful rhino tracking, you’ll need to know the basics of animal behaviour as well as the tracks and signs they leave behind. Individual rhinos can be identified by the distinctive random pattern of cracks that show up in their spoor. This allows trackers to track individual rhinos and collect data on their behaviour and feeding habits.

The Kruger Park offers Rhino tracking safaris that’ll allow you discover nature’s hidden wonders in specially tailored walking trails through a 12,000 ha private wilderness. Highly qualified guides will share their wealth of bush and rhino knowledge with you from the identification of animals, trees, grasses, insects and birds to the medicinal uses of plants, folklore and basic tracking and survival skills. Discover the excitement of, after a while of tracking spoors and clues, finding a pack of rhino in all their glory. Tinga Game Lodge offer Rhino tracking safaris within the Kruger Park as well as the most luxurious Kruger Park Accommodation, fine dining and a wildlife experience second to none.

At Leopard Mountain Game Lodge which is situated within the Zululand Rhino Reserve, highly skilled rangers will take you on a Rhino Tracking Safari. The Zululand Rhino Reserve was created in 1995 in a strategic partnership between the World Wildlife Fund, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and property owners, to provide a haven for the fast dwindling black rhino population. This is now become the new home for a significant black rhino population of 21 black rhino and on the 1 April 2006 the Reserve was blessed with its first beautiful black rhino calf. The founder population introduced into the reserve will form a breeding pool from which the black rhino, which is 1 of the 10 most endangered mammals in the world, can recover and increase in number.

Still in KwaZulu Natal, whithin the Pongola Game Reserve, White Elephant Safari Lodge offers Rhino walks which are an truly exhilarating experience. Gain an even closer understanding of these prehistoric mammals, their ways and their battle against extinction. At White Elephant Game Lodge guests will also be offered the opportunity of participating in the elephant monitoring programme, which is documenting research on the translocated elephant herds. At Shayamoya Game Lodge (also in the Pongola Game Reserve), guests can enjoy stretching their legs where they encounter animals and especially the 'prehistoric looking' rhino on foot. The trails are not strenuous (enjoyable for all fitness levels).

Weenen Game Reserve (established in 1974) has become one of the most enjoyable wildlife enthusiasts’ holiday destination. Its white rhino population exceeds 50, making it one of the most densely populated rhino reserves in South Africa. For those looking for an intimate wildlife experience, Weenen Game Reserve offers exciting Rhino tracking in the company of qualified guides and trackers and guarantees an adrenaline pumping adventure. Visitors who choose to seek out this amazing animal will have the opportunity to meander through the shifting vegetation and view other numerous game species that occur in abundance within this gem of a game park.
