In the 'hood, Ndumo as a destination

Right on the northern-most border of the South African province of KwaZulu Natal lies the little settlement of Ndumo. Directions to Ndumu River Lodge

From Durban:
Follow the N2 north past Stanger, Empangeni, Mtubatuba, Hluhluwe and Mkuze. Turn right towards Jozini 10km north of the Mkuze turnoff. Wind through the mountain pass with the Pongolapoort Dam on your left and drive carefully through Jozini. On the way out of Jozini take the left fork, across the Pongola Dam wall towards Ingwavuma / KwaNgwanase. Continue on a straight road for approx 46 km’s, watching out for cows, goats and potholes until you get to a T-Junction at Bambanana (with petrol station on your right). Turn right toward Tembe Elephant Park / KwaNgwanase. Proceed for another 12,5kms where you will see Ndumu River Lodge entrance signs on the left. [Make sure you pass the sign pointing left to Ndumo Game Reserve and Ndumo! We are approximately 2km past this turn off.]

Alternative route from Durban (Better Road):
Take the N2 north past Stanger, Empangeni and Mtubatuba. Turn off at Hluhluwe. Drive through the town and at the last traffic circle turn left. At Sodwana Bay sign turn right over the railway tracks (just before you reach Ilala Weavers). Look for giraffe, warthogs and antelope on your right. Carry on this road for about one hour passing Mbaswane until you reach next set of traffic circles. Keep going straight through the wetlands where the cell phone reception is bad and speed limit 60. At the last traffic circle turn left toward Ingwavuma / Jozini. (Right turn will take you towards KwaNgwanase and Mozambique border post.) Pass Tembe Elephant Game Reserve on your right hand side. Drive through a town called Emphoweni, and cross over the bridge of the Pongola River. We are approximately 2km up the hill on the right!

From Johannesburg:
Take N17 to Bethal then Ermelo, N2 through Piet Retief then through Pongola, taking left turn to Jozini about 55km after Pongola, before reaching Mkuze. Wind through the mountain pass with the Pongolapoort Dam on your left and drive carefully through Jozini. On the way out of Jozini take the left fork, across the Pongola Dam wall towards Ingwavuma / KwaNgwanase. Follow the signs towards Manguzi, and drive straight through the town. At the traffic circle continue straight toward Ingwavuma / Jozini. Pass the Tembe Elephant Game Reserve on your right hand side. Drive through a town called Emphoweni, and cross over the bridge of the Pongola River. We are approximately 2km up the hill on the right!

Please be careful of livestock and pedestrians on the road. Extra care is required when travelling these rural areas, especially after sunset!
