About Oakes Brewhouse

In 2013, two gutsy ladies decided to go against the grain and start the first all-girl brewery in Modderfontein, Johannesburg, and one of very few in the country. Since then, it has grown into a roaring success. Hand-crafted beers are home-brewed to create products that are delicious, intriguing and completely unique. Beer-lovers from all corners of the globe are invited to sample some of these outstanding brews.

“Okes” is a common South African term for guys or men; but Oakes Brewhouse is actually named after the exquisite oak trees found in the area. The double-meaning was just an added bonus. There are currently four signature beers (available on top or in 450ml bottles) at Oakes, each with its own unique deliciousness. These are the:

Oakes Wise Beer
This is a classic Weiss with prominent clove and banana notes. It is cloudy when it is on tap, but the bottled versions have cleared up. This wheat-based creation is perfect when served ice-cold.

Butt Stout
This is the flagship beer of the brewery and is characterised by its dark cocoa and coffee notes. It is made with roasted malt, setting it apart from traditional South African stouts.

Easy Blonde
With a definite similarity to traditional Pilsners, this is an unfiltered lager with citrus notes and a dry, bitter finish.

American Pale Ale
The girls at Oakes use three imported malts and two hops to give this ale its unique flavour. The hoppy grapefruit finish imbues this full-bodied drink with a very special appeal.

Modderfontein is a suburb on the East Rand of Johannesburg. It is a quick 20-minute drive from the OR Tambo Airport and many of the local hotels and guest houses of Johannesburg and its surrounds.
