About Taroko Trail Park

The spotless beauty of the South African terrain is put on a display of the prettiest sort at the Modderfontein Nature Reserve, which is only a short drive from Johannesburg’s city centre and the OR Tambo International Airport. While any visit to the reserve is well worth it, it really does promise something special when tackled from the saddle of a bicycle, or with walking / running shoes.

The cycling and running routes allow you to explore parts of the reserve that are not accessible by car; enjoying the fresh air, sunshine, tweeting birds and the smell of the bush. It also allows you to adjust your pace and meander the trails at a speed that suits you.

Taroko invites cyclists to try out the four main routes, which are designed to suit all (or most) riding abilities, while the two running and hiking routes are not to be missed as they meander along the river and the stunning dams. This means that beginners (or those simply wanting a fun day out with the family) are able to relax and cycle, hike or run at a slow, comfortable pace; while pros that want to challenge themselves are also able to push their limits here.

The Mountain Bike Routes are

1. Orange Route (10 kilometres)
2. Green Route (18 kilometres)
3. Yellow (32 kilometres)
4. Red (42 kilometres)

The Hiking / Trail running routes are

1. 5km Trail (Loop around 2 dams, including stunning river sections)
2. 11km Trail (Loop around 3 dams, including stunning river sections)

While there are no major technical areas on any of the routes, the dirt roads and increasing distance provide that extra challenge. Of course, there are areas in which cyclists need to tackle slopes, dodge trees, cross streams and balance on bridges.

The routes run off one another, and all promise wonderful views of the countryside, birdlife and water courses. Every Wednesday, the park is open till 21h00 for some night riding and running, which adds a new dimension to the excitement.

The Taroko Trail Park is open every day from 06h00 to 18h00. There is 24-hour security, safe parking, showers and ablutions.
