This market began when a few dads shared a vision to create a place for families with pets and children to spend their weekends; surrounded by good food, great entertainment, and even better vibes. It began in the milking parlour of the Ayrshire dairy farm (hence its name) and has, since its first day in October 2015, hosted thousands of visitors.

The major draw card for the kids is that it has a covered play area with a water slide, jumping castle, and climbing frames. There are also pony rides and a cycle track for little ones, as well as a cycle park of 800 metres for the older children with plenty of energy to burn. Every day, there is a duck race that is so fun and exciting to watch (even for the adults), and the farm-style setting is idyllic.

While the kids are kept entertained, there are dozens of stalls that showcase a unique combination of arts, crafts and delicious foods. The products available range from fresh meats to wire crafts; with loads of variety in-between. Ice-cold craft beers are the best way to cool down on a summer’s day, and the steaming coffees are perfect for wintery mornings. The market and children’s play areas are undercover, so they are great all year round.

Some of the proceeds made at the market go towards local community initiatives. The Cowhouse Market is in Hazeldean, Pretoria; which is about an hour from Johannesburg and about 40 minutes from the OR Tambo International Airport.
