The town of Standerton inherited its name from the original owner of the farm on which it is built, namely Adrian Hendrik Stander. The Vaal River - one of South Africa's largest rivers - flows through Standerton and provides much in the way of water-based activities.

The Grootdraai Dam (the tenth largest dam in South Africa) is 10 kilometers outside of Standerton and is a one of it's major attractions, bringing in revenue from visitors wishing to see the dam and enjoy the activities. Standerton also has a variety of sports facilities to keep sport lovers occupied, whilst the towns amenities provide day to day entertainment like malls and movie houses.
