Greylingstad, Cosmos Country

Situated in the beautiful Mpumalanga region known as Cosmos Country (after the delicate flower called cosmos), Greylingstad may be small, but it has a rich history. Today, it is a growing farming community that has managed to maintain a laid-back pace and a peaceful vibe.

Greylingstad was officially established in 1909, when a number of forts were built in the mountains overlooking the town during the Boer War. The town was formally established by the Dutch Reformed Church, but these forts were built by the Scottish Rifles. By the 1950’s and 1960’s, it had grown into a successful farming community; where cattle, poultry, dairy and maize have continued to be produced to support the locals.

Today, visitors to Greylingstad can climb the steep kopje (a little hill) and see the ruins of the fortified campsite left behind by the British Army at the turn of the 20th century. This includes the tent lines, gun pits and stables; and is always a popular attraction for little ones or those with an interest in the past.

Greylingstad is just west of Standerton in Mpumalanga. Cosmos Country refers to the pretty area in the south-west of the province and, together with Standerton and Greylingstad, is also home to Bethal, Dalmas and Secunda. Greylingstad is almost four hours from Nelspruit and just over an hour’s drive from Johannesburg and its international airport.
