About Port Elizabeth International Airport

While the official name of this airport in Gqeberha is the Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport, it is probably best known as Port Elizabeth Airport. It’s ideally situated just a few minutes’ drive from the beach, city centre, and most of the residential suburbs and the guesthouses and hotels of Port Elizabeth. It is easy to find and access, and there is sufficient parking.

Port Elizabeth International Airport is close to so much of the accommodation in Port Elizabeth, including the beachfront hotels and guesthouses, as well as the apartments, boutique hotels, and B&Bs in the residential areas.

This airport flies to and from various locations, using a number of well-known domestic airlines.

• There are also cargo flights between Port Gqeberha and Johannesburg via BidAir Cargo

There are direct (non-stop) flights from Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) to Durban, Cape Town, and Johannesburg. There are two asphalt runways and 13 parking bays for the planes.

A number of car hire facilities are located on the property, as well as curio shops, fast-food eateries, and great places to have a cup of coffee and watch as the aeroplanes land and take off.

The airport is kept clean, is spacious, and has a good reputation for being safe. So, it’s no wonder that it services more than a million passengers every year.

It was established in 1929 as an airfield for postal delivery between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, and was officially opened in 1936. During the Second World War, the facilities were extended for the 42 Air School of the Royal Air Force as well as the 6 Squadron South African Air Force. Significantly, this airport was the landing site of the first jet-propelled aircraft in 1954.
