Graskop Accommodation / Graskop Hotel Hotel Accommodation in Graskop, Panorama Route

The Graskop Hotel is centrally situated on the Mpumalanga Escarpment at the start of the Panorama Route. On our doorstep you have the famous Pinnacle Rock, God's Window and the historical town of Pilgrim's Rest. A short scenic drive takes you to Bourkes Luck Potholes, Blyde River Canyon, or the Kruger National Park. The Numbi Gate entrance is 52 kilometres from Graskop Hotel.

Away from the hustle and bustle, yet only 4 hours drive from Johannesburg International Airport is the Graskop Hotel, where friendly staff, a warm atmosphere and fresh flowers makes it an ideal place to unwind.

The outside of the Graskop Hotel is pretty unassuming - but walk inside and you'll be greeted by the biggest private collection of contemporary African art in the entire country. Beaded chairs from Nigeria, pygmy beds from Cameroon, sculptures from Ivory Coast, body masks from Tanzania, carvings from Zimbabwe, baskets from South Africa.

Owners Harrie Siertsema, Willem van Bergen, Elva van der Meulen and Ellen Stroud have turned the Graskop Hotel into one of the funkiest spots in Mpumalanga - the hotel itself is a marvellous mixture of Seventies, Art Deco and contemporary African styles - and the place has become very popular with European travellers, particularly the French. It isn't hard to see why.

ACCOMMODATION

The hotel itself has 19 rooms in the main hotel, and a lovely garden wing (15 rooms) set amongst herb beds and shade trees. All en-suite bedrooms are furnished and decorated with your comfort in mind. The hotel has 19 en-suite bedrooms and 15 garden suites with patios overlooking peaceful gardens.

All rooms offer the following:
• En-suite bathroom, shower, or both
• Down duvets
• Tea- / Coffee-making facilities
• Fans
• Television - SABC2, SABC3, e-tv, mnet, mm1, mm2 & mnet sports channels.

FACILITIES

There's a pool, outdoor verandas, a coffee shop, a seriously trendy bar (think Cognacs and intercontinental chatter) and an Internet Café in the courtyard.

Some of the hotel's collection is for sale - but it's a short amble round the corner to the adjoining Delagoa Arts & Crafts centre (owned by Harrie and Willem), which has everything you could ever want on the arts and crafts front, be it a wooden giraffe, a wire lampshade or a snake-lines walking stick. The shop is huge; one foreign guide book called it 'the best selection, best quality and best value for money' art and crafts centre in the country; and you should probably save going there till last (there's plenty to do in and around Graskop, from pancakes to hang-gliding) because you'll never want to leave.

QUOTES

"...this is the only decent option in Graskop proper. The public areas are decorated with an interesting collection of African art. Zulu baskets brighten long corridors, avant-garde metal ostriches flank the foyer, and Swazi pots and sculpture dot the lounge. Rooms are light and airy, with white walls, green wicker furniture, and lots of blond wood." FODOR'S Guidebook South Africa, New 2nd Edition
