Nitida Wines are named after the protea nitida which grows amongst endangered Renosterveld Flora. The story of this small wine cellars humble beginnings is a heart-warming one where owner Bernhard Veller and his wife bought the farm in 1990 (with help from his mother-in-law), were taught by farm worker Klaas how to milk cows and saw them planting their first vineyards together in 1992.
After running a farm with 50 sheep and 2 cows and making all the wines himself for 3 years, he now works with winemaker RJ. They only intended to make a few barrels, but in three years they produced their first double-gold Sauvignon Blanc and years down the line are still recognised as a top boutique wine cellar and were named ‘Top Producer’ at Michelangelo International Wine Awards in 2009.
Visit one of their two restaurants; Cassia overlooking the dam and Tables which recently opened in November 2010. While you can dine on the decks of Cassia and celebrate a wedding or host a conference, Tables offers seating outside with the surroundings of lawn and indoors which makes it perfect for those family lunches and outings. Taste Nitida’s wines at the cellar door and see if it rings true to its origin; Nitidus meaning bright, shiny, refined and cultured.
