Our tip: the highlight of the hiking trail is the views; remember your water!
Day one of the trail is fairly taxing as the route through the kloof involves a fair amount of rock scrambling and boulder hopping. The trail though is fairly new and as such has chains in several places to help navigation. There is also an alternative and easier route, if you are not up to the challenge.
But for those who persevere the day is worth it not only for the cycads en route, but also for the number of appealing rock pools on the way down the kloof. Some of them have weathered in interesting formations.
It is a good idea to hold off with lunch until you reach the bottom of the kloof, on the banks of the Olifants River, where it is perfect to break and swim.
The trail then heads along the river's edge and up to Arendsnes (eagles nest), a particularly unique overnight hut perched on the edge of the cliffs overlooking the Olifants River gorge. The shower in particular deserves a mention for its views out over the valley.
The second day's hike is half as long, so is something of a slow walk to allow you to take in the various rock formations and the views. An added bonus is the respite of the indigenous bush through which the trail passes.
It is possible to do the trail in one day.
